Joan graduated from the University of Ulster in 1989 with an MEng in Civil Engineering. She joined Sir Robert McAlpine as a graduate trainee and her first job was as site engineer on an infrastructure project just outside Reading. She was then seconded to Halcow to gain the necessary design experience. Joan spent the next ten years or so working for Civil Engineering Principal Contractors local to her home which assisted in meeting the demands of family life.
In 2000 Joan was working on a project in Portbury Dock which interfaced with the operational railway and this led to a change in employer and diversification of knowledge and expertise. Early in 2002 Joan joined Railtrack working within the S&C team based in Swindon, serving the Western Route. For the next 15 years Joan continued to work within the arena of Track renewals undertaking a variety of roles at both local and national levels. This culminated in leading Network Rail’s Track Transformation programme in CP5 to drive efficiency improvements across all parties with an interest in delivering Track renewals. Joan joined AECOM as Engineering Director for Rail in 2017 and leads a team of Professional Heads who are dedicated to delivering a quality output, both in terms of process and people.
