  • South & West Wales Section Meeting - Intersection Bridge Cardiff East
  • Andrew Wilson
  • Intersection Bridge Cardiff East (Phil Holbourn, Holbourn Engineering Ltd & Network Rail)

The story so far: As part of the Electrification of the South Wales Main Line into Cardiff, the
wires need to pass under Cardiff Intersection Bridges, which have a low soffit height, requiring track lowering, but also over a large culverted canal underneath, which required reconstruction as a partial syphon. The speaker will describe the design of the slab track system, which included the first use of the VIPA-DFC system on Rheda 2000, which had to navigate the Product Acceptance process, plus the early implementations of the V-TRAS system for transitions, and also the usage of a derailment mitigation system to protect the bridge piers, together with the reconstruction of the culvert underneath. As the culvert could not be stopped for any significant length of time, and the railway had to remain open with at least two tracks, temporary works were significant.
The design for the slab track system was near-complete so will be described in technical
detail. However, the system never got built, but that’s for part 2.
