  • Lancaster, Barrow & Carlisle Section Meeting - The Work of the Historical Railways Estate
  • Phil Benzie
  • The Work of the Historical Railways Estate (Lee Holland, Highways England)

The presentation highlights the work of the Historical Railways Estate (HRE), which is today managed by Highways England. Starting with a brief history of the estate, in which thousands of bridges and tunnels (rendered redundant by the extensive closures of railway branch lines in the 1950s and 60s) still require maintenance due to on-going liabilities for the safety of roads and neighbouring properties, it continues to focus on some of the technical work currently being undertaken by the HRE, particularly on tunnels. Links with Sustrans and preserved railways are explained, including plans to create new cycle tracks along former branch lines. Originally given to the South and West Wales Branch of the PWI in 2018, the presentation has been updated to include additional material on local sites within the North West at Keswick, Roa lsland, Carlisle and Salford.
