  • West of England Section Meeting - Cardiff Intersection Bridges: Part 2: Very Reduced Electrical Clearances
  • Constantin Ciobanu
  • Cardiff Intersection Bridges: Part 2: Very Reduced Electrical Clearances (Philip Holbourn, Holbourn Engineering Ltd, currently DPE and SPE Track for South Wales Electrification)

Philip will describe the challenging alternative solution that has been implemented at Cardiff Intersection Bridges, where the distances between wire/bridge and also wire/train have been reduced to very low levels. The solution involves unusual track forms, use of surge arrestors, a specialist insulated coating on the bridge, water troughs, bridge strengthening works, lots of documentation, and careful integration. Challenges included great debates regarding class 37 locomotives, steam locomotives, window box clearances, the likelihood of lightening, paint, concrete, and the exact wording of various standards and the real risks involved.
Philip is both DPE and Track Engineer for the project, and will describe the fascinating journey through track and OLE that this project has woven to achieve a complex but successful energisation.
