  • Nottingham and Derby Section Meeting - Application of the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment on Infrastructure Upgrade Projects
  • John Garlick
  • Application of the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment on Infrastructure Upgrade Projects (Paul Richards, Senior Consultant, Ricardo Rail)

Synopsis:  The Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM-RA) aims to harmonise processes for risk evaluation and assessment, and applies when any technical, operational or organisation change to the railway system is proposed.  The proposer of the change needs to consider at an early stage in a project’s lifecycle whether it has an impact on safety, and the outcome of this assessment will determine the process which needs to be followed to comply with the requirements of the CSM-RA.  In this presentation, Paul will give an overview of the CSM-RA, and an insight into its specific application on multi-disciplinary infrastructure upgrade projects.  He will describe the key CSM-RA activities and outputs during the project lifecycle, specific experiences and learning points, and will conclude by summarising how the CSM-RA interfaces with the process of introducing novel technologies to the infrastructure.
