The Railway & Maritime History of East London (Ray Pocock, PWI Fellow, Thames Valley)

Synopsis: The Speaker will describe the history and development of the Docks in East London and the extensive system of freight and passenger railways which evolved to support them. This transport infrastructure was vital to support the UK’s Empire and maritime import/export trade and for distribution by rail throughout the country. The first passenger line for commuters was built in the 1840's to serve the docks from the city. The talk will conclude with a description of the latest developments in the transport infrastructure in the area.
