Track Design for High Speed (Niall Fagan, HS2)

The trackform and the track alignment are 2 key aspects of high speed rail design and have implications for the construction, operation, maintenance and performance of the railway system as a whole. It is essential that the most appropriate trackform is chosen for the railway being designed and a structured evaluation process based on objective evidence-based data should be carried out in order to determine which trackform better achieves the required performance under the specified operating conditions. The track alignment and associated parameters are also important and will not only impact the performance of the trains and infrastructure in service, but also the passengers and those adjacent to the railway. This paper will focus on the technical aspects of the trackform and track alignment design.
