  • West Yorkshire Section Meeting - Irlam Bridge Replacement
  • Martin Wooff
  • Irlam Bridge Replacement (Dave Woods, Principal Engineer - Civils, Jablite Ltd)

The original 1892 bridge supported the Manchester to Liverpool line over the former alignment of the river Irwell which had been diverted into the Manchester Ship Canal in 1900.  The bridge had reached the end of its service life and train speeds had been downgraded to 25mph so replacement was needed.  The old river bed had previously been infilled with up to 8m of very soft clays and silts and was contaminated with arsenic, hydrocarbons and methane so removal was too difficult but any solution needed to be light enough to avoid excessive consolidation.  A reinforced granular basal layer and methane cap was placed before a 14.5m high EPS embankment was built up to the level of the bridge soffit and 1:1 embankment sides placed.  The bridge was then removed in 6 pieces prior to placement of the final layers of EPS, ballast and track reinstatement to full network speeds during a 1 week line closure.

Meeting from 17:30 for a 18:00 start with light refreshments.
