  • Track Buckling - How did we get where we are today? (Andy Franklin, Network Rail & South & West Wales Section Chairman)

    Synopsis:

Andy looks at the underlying principles of how track resists buckling and explores some learning from past track buckles and how these have influenced the standards and procedures we use today. Andy considers some common threads in the causes of track buckling. The focus will be on CWR buckles but recognises that many issues are common to both CWR and jointed track.
The presentation ends with a look at a 15-minute training film produced by the British Transport Film unit for The Railway Executive in 1951 entitled “Track Buckling and its Prevention”. Track safety has come a long way from then but the core messages about the track remain the same.
