  • Derailment Investigation (Dr Mark Burstow, Principal Vehicle Track Dynamics Engineer, Network Rail)

Mark is a specialist in wheel/rail interaction and railway vehicle dynamics. He joined Network Rail in 2006 having been involved in research into rolling contact fatigue (RCF) since 2001. Since then he has worked on a wide range of wheel/rail interaction problems, including research into different forms of wheel and rail damage, optimising vehicle primary suspensions to reduce wheel/rail forces for new and existing vehicles, and ride and stability problems. Since 2010 he has developed and led Network Rail’s in-house derailment investigation capability, responding to incidents and undertaking analysis to determine the cause of derailments.
The presentation will discuss the derailment investigation process, from being called to the site of a derailment through to delivering an investigation report and developing recommendations to reduce the risk of future incidents. The different mechanisms which can cause the wheel to leave the rail will be covered, and the different types of evidence and analysis techniques which can be used to inform the investigation.
