PWI - Marketing Executive

Salary: £20k - £26k (dependent on skills and experience)


The Permanent Way Institution (PWI) is the professional institution for the world of rail infrastructure engineering. Working closely with organisations from across the industry, including Network Rail, Transport for London, HS2 and Transport for Wales, we provide a range of services to develop the knowledge and competence of all those working in the UK rail industry. Our members, both individual and corporate, benefit from our specialist technical courses and diplomas, our routes to professional registration, the technical meetings and seminars we host, our vast suite of learning resources including our highly respected quarterly Journal, and being part of a unique knowledge community.

The PWI has undergone a significant brand redevelopment since 2020 with a new website due to go live in 2021. We are looking to grow our engagement and brand image through social media, blogging and other activities, with the aim of increasing our membership base and raising our industry profile. This is a very exciting time for the PWI, and we wish to appoint a Marketing Executive who can hit the ground running by supporting us through this period and implement our daily marketing and communications activities.


Assist with the development and execution of all marketing and communications activities.

Digital marketing

  • Write and distribute monthly e-newsletters and weekly e-blasts to our community using Mail Chimp.
  • Work with our technical team to write news and blog articles for our website by sourcing new content that is relevant to our industry and our community. This includes staying abreast of social and industry trends.
  • Post news across social media platforms, producing engaging image and video content to a high standard and on brand, across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.
  • Like, reshare and comment on stakeholder posts and respond to their comments.
  • Organise our photo and video asset library, including stock images and YouTube channel.
  • Advertising the Ambassador network and recruiting new Ambassadors.

Print and press

  • Proof-reading articles for the PWI Journal for brand consistency, spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Write press releases and manage PR activities / relationships as and when required.
  • Assist the Creative Manager with the organisation of Journal content and distribution.
  • Manage relationships with industry magazines and other press, including cross marketing agreements.

Website maintenance

  • Maintain and assist in managing our new Wordpress Elementor website with the creation of new pages and content, ensuring all content is up to date, accurate and on brand.
  • Manage search engine optimisation (SEO), meta data and tagging, working with our website partner to ensure bugs and performance are maintained.

Asset management

  • Assist in managing the Institution’s brand identity documents.
  • Using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and InDesign) and Microsoft (Word and PowerPoint) assist with the production and organisation of all marketing materials, including leaflets, posters, flyers, corporate brochures, press adverts, events materials and e-newsletters.
  • Organise exhibition displays and PWI branded merchandise.

Meetings and events

  • Attend Executive Team meetings (currently online) and contribute marketing updates.
  • Capture and prepare the minutes of Board and executive meetings.
  • Attend website project meetings (online) with our website partner as and when necessary.
  • Attend the PWI Technical Seminars (one per quarter and in-person, subject to change due to Covid-19) and deliver social media updates leading up to, during, and after each event, taking photos on the day. Includes announcing and thanking sponsors / exhibitors.
  • Attend annual events such as the PWI Annual Celebration Event, the PWI Practical Trackwork Challenge and industry expos such as Railtex and Rail Live. Includes marketing the events, setting-up, networking, taking photos and producing social media updates.
  • Attend any other ad hoc meetings or talks to assist the marketing function, including attending and preparing for the Section Secretary meetings (twice a year), and the AGM.
  • Organise any expo marketing administration, including engaging with suppliers.
  • Attend Technical Board meetings (online) and produce social media updates.

Essential criteria

  • Previous experience in a similar marketing role.
  • A Batchelors degree in marketing or related subject.
  • Excellent copy writing and editing skills for print, digital and press, conveying brand identity at all times.
  • Knowledge of using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Advanced social media skills including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linked and Hootsuite.
  • Web design and management skills ideally using Wordpress, Wix or SquareSpace.
  • Advanced email marketing skills using Campaign Monitor or Mail Chimp.
  • Experience in marketing Analytics using Google and Hootsuite.
  • Experience in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Excellent teamworking skills; works well with others, approachable and adaptable.
  • Fluent in English; very strong reading and writing skills with excellent grammar.
  • Research skills.
  • Strong organisation skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proactive and results driven.

Desirable criteria

  • Graphic design skills using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Video editing skills.
  • Prior work experience of the rail and / or engineering sector.
  • Presentation and networking skills. 

We are looking for an all-rounder with a passion for marketing and a proactive, can-do approach. A team player with excellent people skills who can hit the ground running and get creative, contributing new ideas to the team. You must be able to self-manage and work autonomously from home, with the flexibility to travel within the UK and attend meetings and events when required.
