Our first practical trackwork challenge14 November 2017
We held our first practical trackwork challenge at Didcot Railway Centre on November 8th and 9th. It was designed to give the opportunity to get up close and personal with track improvement work. That’s something which our corporate members told us is increasingly difficult on ‘normal’ railway works sites.
Two teams, each of twenty people, took on the challenges. One site involved the resleepering and realignment 90 metres of plain line. The second challenge was to re-timber and realign a unit of S&C. There were seven women in the two teams – an encouraging sign as the number you might expect based on the industry average for infrastructure engineering would be three or four – a small step in the right direction.
Twelve different companies were represented and team members had widely varying skills and experience. However, over the two days, both groups settled into good teams, working well together to rise to the challenge. Both sites were handed back on time, to the right quality and with a clean safety record. Feedback from the delegates has been very positive.
