19th October 2017 - High Speed Rail Lines: The Technical Challenges

Update from David Packer, CEO - February 2017

Date: 23/02/2017

It’s been a while since my last blog, so there’s some catching up to do! We had a very successful programme of technical events in the autumn of 2016, including a fantastic programme of Section meetings. The highlight was, no doubt, our joint international seminar with the UEEIV (the Union of European Railway Engineering Institutions). Held at the Manchester Conference Centre on the subject of Fixed Track Forms for High Speed Lines, a capacity audience was both captivated ...

Update from David Packer, CEO - New Section, successful seminar and Young Achiever award

Date: 20/04/2016

The first good news story of the year is the re-emergence of the South Wales Section. The new Section Secretary, Andrew Wilson, and the committee have put together a programme of late afternoon meetings.  They will take place on the second Monday of the month at 17.15. It is a great way to keep up to date with the latest technical developments without eating into your evening. The first meeting was held on March 14th and their next meeting is on April 11th at the Network Rail ...

Railtex, London Half Day Seminar and Network Rail’s Track Apprentice of the Year

Date: 09/06/2015

What a month May was! Three days at Railtex, the Section Secretaries’ conference, the company AGM, London half-day seminar and the launch of professional registration. Busy just isn’t the word. There was optimism in the air at Railtex – an industry looking with confidence to the future. There was really positive contact with the PWI too. Our stand with its stylish branding attracted a large number of visitors and our team of volunteers was often hard pressed dealing with ...

Exciting plans for 2015

Date: 26/03/2015

It’s been a while since my last blog – my apologies for that. This blog will precede the next edition of The Journal by a few weeks, so it’s a good opportunity for a quick update. We ended 2014 with 100 more members at the end of the year than we had at the beginning. This is the second year of net growth, reversing many years of steadily falling numbers and so is very welcome. Growth in membership was one of the key factors in turning around the PWI’s ...

The professional registration project is now gathering pace

The AGM in June was held successfully, despite a location that proved to be rather harder to reach than we had expected! We’ll be looking at using a better venue next year. Also in June, Steve Whitmore and I manned the PWI stand at Rail Live. Network Rail kindly hosted us in the large marquee for their High Output team and we were kept pretty busy for the two days. Judging by that event, interest in the PWI is certainly growing.

Another thing that is growing is membership. At the end ...

PWI Scotland Technical Seminar - Electrification: delivering the business case

PWI Scotland Technical Seminar

Electrification: delivering the business case

The Scottish Government has recognised the benefits of a rolling programme of electrification and Network Rail Scotland is developing those plans. Electrifying an existing railway requires the electrification system to be integrated into the broader railway system: the configuration of the traction system and its constituent parts has implications for the operation, maintenance, and performance of the ...
